As you may or may not know Carnaval {Carnival for all you English folks} just finished last week. Well here in Pipa we have a big celebration the day after the last day of Carnaval on Weds. Parades, dress-up {it is typical that men dress as women and women dress as men. But you see any and all costumes} Starting mid-day we got all dressed up {well I got dressed up as a man, channeling Elvis with the short doo and well yeah Max went half and half *boring*.. . opting out for surf shorts with one of my bikini tops stuffed with socks for boobies. And well my sweet dear Malu, we tried to make her a man too, but only made half of a beard on that sweet face, before she got annoyed} Then we headed to the street for festivities. We marched with the band for about an hour with Malu before she got tired and cranky. SO that was our cue she had had enough. We then swooped her over to her little friend Luisa’s for the rest of the afternoon with the baba {babysitter} while Mamae and Papai had a bit of Carnaval fun “sans” baby!!

Here is Mamae Elvis with sweet baby

Tsk Tsk .. and just so you can get an idea of the people of Carnaval .. the one below us is the star of Pipa Carnaval {obviously a man dressed as a woman .. but I must say he or ahheemmm …should I say she, makes a darn good woman!!!}

And notice my chest hair .. teheheheeeee :)

Rio de Janeiro for OLYMPICS 2016 … YAYYYYYYYYYY! PARABENS!**

The bid for the 2016 Olympics is over. In an announcement made Friday, the IOC has awarded Rio de Janeiro the opportunity to host the 2016 Olympic Games.

Right after the announcement big celebrations broke out all over the country, especially in Rio. People cried, danced, and partied in all the joy.

There were four city finalists, Chicago; USA, Tokyo; Japan, Rio de Janeiro; Brazil, and Madrid; Spain. Chicago was the first to get eliminated, followed by Tokyo. In the last round Rio came out on top over Madrid with more than 40 votes. Rio de Janeiro is the first South American city to host the Olympics.

This is wonderful in my opinion. It will bring tons of new jobs, boost the economy, and bring a whole new vision to Brazil. And I sure do hope the benefits from this trickle down to those who need it most. I think this is just the boost Brazil needed, now maybe people around the world will learn more about Brazil other than just Carnival and nice bums.

Congratulations Rio, and we will see you all here in 2016 !

**Congratulations

….Or as we say here Parabens (Congratulations)!

Brazil's Flag .. it reads "Order and Progress"

Today is Brazil’s Independence Day. It has been a weekend full of parties, music, parades, and festivities. This is a very big holiday celebrated here, as one can imagine. Our little beach village that we live in, has been invaded by the “holiday weekenders” as it is every year at this time. Hence the fact for being a hermit crab this weekend. We go from about 10,000 people to about 20,000 (ok, maybe I am over estimating, but I don’t know exact figures) in one weekend. Its quite crazy. They arrive in carloads, rent a large house (always empty, with nothing in it, just bare walls) and set up shop. They bring EVERYTHING from mattresses rolled up, to cookware, fans, stereos, BIG speakers, food, liquor, hammocks, and the list goes on. They usually accommodate up to 50 people in one house and throw a BIG party. The party goes for 3 days straight, non-stop. Now most of these are young people, but you do get a few older ones too, whom usually stay in a Pousada (Inn) with family. I can say for the most part it’s o.k., but I do have to say I am a bit sleep deprived, and this time it’s not from my daughter, but the loud music playing round the clock. For all the businesses here, it’s a wonderful money making weekend, and that always puts a smile on everyone’s face.

SO in honor of Brazil’s Independence today, I wanted to share a few interesting facts on Brazil. Enjoy ..

Brazil was a colony of Portugal until it gained its Independence in 1822

Predominately Roman Catholic and Portuguese speaking

It is made up by 26 states. With Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and Belo Horizonte being the largest metropolitan cities in Brazil

Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest country in the world, after Russia, China, Canada and the USA.

It is the fifth most populous country in the world

The currency in Brazil is the Real (pronounced he-owl or plural reais he-eyes)

Brazil is recognized as having the greatest biological diversity in the world, scientists estimate that the total number of plant and animal species in Brazil could approach 4 million

In 2007, Fundacao Nacional do Indio (National Indian Foundation) reported the presence of 67 tribes yet living without contact with civilization, putting that at the largest number of uncontacted peoples in the world

Brazil is a political and economic leader in Latin America

The national capital city is Brasilia

Major export products include aircraft, coffee, automobiles, soybean, iron ore, orange juice, steel, ethanol, textiles, footwear, corned beef and electrical equipment

Brazil passion is futebol (soccer) and novelas (soap operas)

The festival of Carnaval (Carnival) is one of the most potent images of Brazil. A large celebration held every year 40 days before Easter and marks the beginning of Lent.

Some great music styles of Brazil include Bossa Nova, Samba, Frevo, Forro, and Pagode

These are just a few of the wonderful, interesting facts of Brazil. There is so much more I could tell but then this post would never end. If you are interested in reading a nice book on Brazil, its people, culture, history and more, I recommend this one. I know there are many more books out there, but this one I have personally read and loved!

If you are living in Brazil, please share with me how your city celebrates Independence Day? Or if you have any great book recommendations on Brazil, I would love to hear….

Tchau (Bye) for now …….Tanya

“Feliz dia dos Pais para todos os Pais” !

“Happy Father’s Day to all the Dad’s”

So, oh so accordingly as soon as I started this blog I got really sick, as well as my daughter. After 2 days of going to the hospital and many hours spent calming a crying baby and trying to get rest myself, Im finally starting to feel better. Hence the fact of not writing any new content in the last week. Now..moving on to what I was saying ….

In the US Father’s Day is celebrated in June but not here. Today, we celebrate Father’s Day! It’s quite rainy and cloudy here, but it doesn’t stop all the ‘nativos’, from a having a big ‘churrasco’ otherwise known as ‘BBQ’. It’s a pretty common form of celebration here, to gather together the whole family and eat. (Which eating is not what I need to be doing. I am trying to work off this extra baby fat that I gained during pregnancy.) With that said, my family will not be having ‘churrasco‘. Due to the fact that we have a ‘cha de bebe’ to attend (baby shower) and well… I just don’t feel great today, still harboring the lingering affects of my cold. So, with all good intentions in my mind, I was gonna wake up and make my husband my favorite Father’s Day breakfast, in honor of his first ‘Dia dos Pais’.. and well.. I failed **looks down** Bad wife. Just couldn’t get out of bed this morning. So to Max, .. ‘Feliz Dia dos Pais’ . You have been a wonderful father to our daughter.

The Local

So how do you and your family celebrate Father’s Day ?
